How real pirates got their names

During the Golden Age of Piracy, roughly the late 17th and early 18th centuries, many pirates were known by nicknames, partly for reputation and partly to hide their real identities. Edward Teach became Blackbeard; John Rackham was Calico Jack, reportedly for his clothing; Bartholomew Roberts became Black Bart. Women pirates such as Anne Bonny and Mary Read sailed in the same era. Nicknames came from appearance, clothing, injuries and deeds.

Using pirate names

  • For a party or game, give everyone a nickname that fits something about them. It's funnier than a random one.
  • In fiction, let a pirate hide behind the nickname. The real name is a secret worth revealing.
  • Captains often had grander nicknames than crew; a ship's cook called “the Terror of the Tides” is a joke waiting to happen.
  • For Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19), pair your pirate name with a ship name for the full effect.

Frequently asked questions

How did pirates get their nicknames?

Mostly from their appearance, clothing, injuries or reputation. Blackbeard was named for his beard, and Calico Jack reportedly for his calico clothes. Nicknames also helped pirates avoid being identified by their real names.

Were there female pirates?

Yes. Anne Bonny and Mary Read are the best-known female pirates of the Golden Age, and there were others in different eras and seas, including Grace O'Malley in 16th-century Ireland.

Can I use these pirate names for a party or game?

Of course. They're free to use for parties, games, roleplay, stories, or anything else.
