About robot names

Robots in fiction tend to get one of two kinds of name: a cold model number or a warm nickname their humans gave them. This generator does both, plus industrial unit names and retro 1950s-style robots. They also suit robot vacuums, school robotics teams and coding projects.

This generator is free and unlimited — click Generate as many times as you like for a fresh set of robot names every time. Nothing to install, no account, no catch.

How robots get their names

The word robot comes from Karel Čapek's 1920 play R.U.R., built from the Czech robota, meaning forced labour. Since then, fictional robots have usually been named in one of two ways: by designation (R2-D2, C-3PO and countless model numbers), which makes them feel like products, or by nickname, often given by the humans around them, which makes them feel like people. The moment a robot gets a nickname is a classic beat in robot stories.

Naming a robot character

  • Give your robot a designation and a nickname. Which one other characters use shows how they see it.
  • Hide meaning in a model number: initials, a date or a joke only the creator understands.
  • Short names are best for real robots and voice assistants, because they have to be called out loud.
  • For a robotics team, a punchy friendly name looks better on a T-shirt than a model number.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the word robot come from?

From the 1920 play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) by Czech writer Karel Čapek. It's based on the Czech word robota, meaning forced labour or drudgery.

What should I name my robot vacuum?

Something short and friendly that's fun to say — the Friendly style above is a good place to start. If it's controlled by voice, avoid names that sound like your other devices' wake words.

Can I use these names for a school robotics project?

Yes. They're free to use for school projects, teams, games, stories and real robots.
